WhatsApp is one of the best apps for instant messaging right now, and it is extremely popular. As a result of this, most people have it installed on their Smartphones to keep in contact with their friends and family, which is very nice… Until you get added to a group chat. Every user is dragged to one group chat from time to time, and usually there are lots of messages and pictures posted in there everyday. By default, WhatsApp downloads each and everyone of those pictures and videos, so your data plan, your free storage and your patience can run out prematurely.
The good news is that you can set WhatsApp to change its behaviour when downloading photos and videos. You can tell the app that you don’t want it to download any files unless you are connected to a WiFi network (which will save your data plan, but not your free storage) or you can tell it to stop downloading things at all.
How to turn it off on an Android Smartphone
In order to do this, you need to enter WhatsApp and access the options menú. From there, go to “data usage” and you will see the option called “auto download”. There you have three options: if you don’t want anything to be downloaded on your Smartphone without your permission, just mark “no files” on the three options. Now WhatsApp won’t download any files automatically.
If, on the other hand, you want to keep downloading those files, but only when connected to a WiFi network, then you need to change your mark on the second option. So click the option “connected to WiFi” and mark the files that you want WhatsApp to download automatically. You can limit it to only pictures and documents, or you can let it download everything.
How to turn it off on an iPhone
If you have an iPhone, you need to do a slightly different process. First, you need to acess the configuration menu, and then click on “data usage”. There you will see several options, under the label “automatic multimedia download”. These options are photos, audio, videos and documents. You can clic on each one of them and just mark “No”. This will disable automatic downloads on your iPhone.
